TRAINING THAT REVEALS

THE INDIVIDUAL ARTIST.

Anson’s teaching is rooted in the rigor and history of codified dance techniques, from classical ballet to modern dance. He uses precision as a tool to help dancers deepen and define their artistic identity.

His teaching spans pre-professional, university, adult, and professional settings.

TRAINING FOR A MORE ADAPTABLE DANCER.

WHY THIS TRAINING MATTERS

Through complex rhythms, changes of direction, and coordination, dancers learn to move with precision while thinking and responding in real time. The result is greater strength, independence, and freedom in both physical and artistic choices.

A LIVING PRACTICE

For Anson, Cunningham Technique® has become a throughline across an unusually varied performing career. Its rigor has expanded his range and adaptability, allowing him to move confidently between ballet, modern, and contemporary choreography. He teaches it as a way of preparing dancers for the breadth of what a career in dance may ask of them.

Watch Merce explain the origins of the Cunningham Technique® and how he has used it throughout the years.

AS TOLD BY MERCE

‍ ‍1 5+

Anson’s experience with Cunningham’s work spans more than fifteen years of study, practice, and performance. At Juilliard, he immersed himself in Cunningham Technique and repertory, later deepening that practice through extensive work with the Merce Cunningham Trust and professional performance. In 2019, he was selected as one of 25 dancers for the New York performance of Night of 100 Solos at BAM—the largest Cunningham Event ever created, staged across New York, London, and Los Angeles on Cunningham’s 100th birthday.

YEARS OF EXPERIENCE

CARRYING THE WORK FORWARD

In 2024, Anson was selected for the Merce Cunningham Trust’s inaugural Cunningham Technique® Teacher Training program, joining a select new generation of authorized instructors entrusted with the Technique’s future. Through this initiative, the Trust is investing in teachers who can carry Cunningham’s ideas forward while continuing to make the work relevant to dancers training and working today.

APPROACH

TECHNIQUE AS A TOOL

Technique builds capacity, not conformity.
Rigorous training expands a dancer's physical vocabulary, creating greater freedom for artistic exploration.

INDIVIDUAL ARTISTRY

Every dancer brings something distinct to the work.
Anson encourages specificity, curiosity, and ownership, making space for each dancer's physicality and perspective to remain present.

HISTORY IN PRACTICE

Technique does not exist without context.
Connecting movement practices to the people, ideas, and histories that shaped them gives dancers a deeper understanding of what they are practicing and why.
