Anson Zwingelberg is a South Carolina–based dance artist and educator who performs internationally and works in teaching and arts leadership.

Anson currently performs with Pam Tanowitz Dance and Lucinda Childs Dance Company. With Pam Tanowitz Dance, he has appeared in Pastoral, which premiered at Bard SummerScape and was named among The New York Times Best Dance Performances of 2025, as well as world premieres at the Royal Opera House presented by Van Cleef & Arpels’ Dance Reflections, the Palais Garnier 150th Anniversary Season with the Paris Opera, Lincoln Center, Teatro Real de Madrid, Rockefeller Center, and Opera Philadelphia. With Lucinda Childs Dance Company, he performs landmark works by the pioneering postmodern choreographer, including Field Dance 2 from Einstein on the Beach (1984) and Available Light (1983).

Anson is an authorized instructor of Cunningham Technique® through the Merce Cunningham Trust and completed the Trust’s inaugural teacher-training program in 2024. He was invited to perform in the Merce Cunningham Centennial’s Night of 100 Solos at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, a large-scale international project honoring Cunningham’s repertory that received the 2019 Bessie Award for Outstanding Performance. His teaching practice includes Cunningham Technique® alongside ballet, modern and contemporary technique, improvisation, and conditioning.

Previously, Anson danced with Charlotte Ballet, including appearances at Jacob’s Pillow’s Inside/Out, Ballet West’s National Choreographic Festival, and the Chautauqua Institution. During his time with the company, he was nominated by Artistic Director Hope Muir for the Princess Grace Dance Fellowship. His freelance career also includes work with New York–based ZviDance as well as New York Theatre Ballet, performing in premieres presented at New York Live Arts and at the American Dance Festival in Durham, NC.

Anson began his dance training in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, at Coastal Dance Centre under Liza Mata. He continued his training at the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities, studying with Stanislav Issaev, Josée Garant, and Sandra Neels (Merce Cunningham Dance Company, 1963–73).

He earned his BFA in Dance from The Juilliard School in 2017 and appeared in two consecutive Guggenheim Works & Process programs showcasing works in development. He also trained at Springboard Danse and intensively with the Merce Cunningham Trust.

Alongside his performance career, Anson is actively engaged in dance education and arts leadership across South Carolina. He is on faculty at Coastal Carolina University, works closely with Coastal Dance Centre, and serves on the board of Coastal Youth Ballet Theatre. Through teaching, mentorship, and artistic leadership, he supports dancers at a range of stages, offering rigorous training and informed professional perspective grounded in current performance practice.
